California contractor license classifications

The 35 license classifications held in force by contractors in the California records: what each one covers and how many listed businesses hold it.

• A General Engineering Contractor 497 holders Fixed works that need specialized engineering knowledge: irrigation, drainage, water supply, flood control, harbors, railroads, highways, tunnels, airports, sewers, bridges, pipelines, power plants, earthmoving and paving.
• B General Building Contractor 759 holders Structures built for the shelter or support of people, animals or property. A B contractor can take a prime contract on a project that involves at least two unrelated building trades, or a framing or carpentry contract.
• B-2 Residential Remodeling Contractor 3 holders Improvements to existing residential wood-frame structures, on projects that require at least three unrelated building trades or crafts.
• C-2 Insulation and Acoustical Contractor 17 holders Installs thermal insulation and acoustical (sound) materials in buildings.
• C-4 Boiler, Hot Water Heating and Steam Fitting Contractor 8 holders Installs, maintains and repairs boilers, hot-water heating systems, steam fitting and their piping and controls.
• C-5 Framing and Rough Carpentry Contractor 4 holders Framing and rough carpentry: wood and light-gauge framing, sheathing and structural carpentry.
• C-6 Cabinet, Millwork and Finish Carpentry Contractor 22 holders Cabinets, millwork, trim and finish carpentry.
• C-7 Low Voltage Systems Contractor 31 holders Communication, sound, alarm (other than fire) and other low-voltage systems.
• C-8 Concrete Contractor 15 holders Forms, pours, places and finishes concrete: foundations, slabs, sidewalks, driveways and other concrete work.
• C-9 Drywall Contractor 9 holders Installs and finishes gypsum wallboard (drywall), including taping and texturing.
• C-10 Electrical Contractor 189 holders Installs, connects and maintains the wiring, fixtures, appliances, raceways and conduits that generate, transmit or use electrical energy, including solar photovoltaic systems.
• C-12 Earthwork and Paving Contractor 14 holders Digging, moving and placing earth, grading and trenching, and paving with asphalt or other surfacing.
• C-15 Flooring and Floor Covering Contractor 20 holders Installs and finishes floor coverings: hardwood, carpet, vinyl, laminate and other flooring.
• C-16 Fire Protection Contractor 27 holders Fire protection systems: automatic sprinklers, standpipes, fire pumps and other suppression equipment.
• C-17 Glazing Contractor 5 holders Glass and glazing: windows, storefronts, mirrors, shower doors and other glass installations.
• C-20 Warm-Air Heating, Ventilating and Air-Conditioning Contractor 49 holders HVAC: installs, maintains and repairs warm-air heating, ventilation and air-conditioning systems, their ducts and controls.
• C-21 Building Moving and Demolition Contractor 8 holders Raises, lowers, moves and demolishes buildings and structures.
• C-27 Landscaping Contractor 20 holders Landscape work: grading, planting, irrigation systems, hardscape such as walkways, patios and low retaining walls, and outdoor lighting.
• C-28 Lock and Security Equipment Contractor 1 holder Locks, safes, vaults, door hardware and security equipment.
• C-29 Masonry Contractor 7 holders Brick, block, stone and other masonry units set with mortar or grout.
• C-31 Construction Zone Traffic Control Contractor 2 holders Traffic control in construction zones: signs, cones, barricades and temporary pavement markings.
• C-33 Painting and Decorating Contractor 47 holders Painting and decorating: surface preparation, paint, coatings and wallcoverings.
• C-36 Plumbing Contractor 43 holders Plumbing: water supply and drain piping, gas piping, water heaters, fixtures and sewer connections on the property.
• C-38 Refrigeration Contractor 12 holders Refrigeration equipment and systems: cold storage, commercial refrigeration and their piping and controls.
• C-39 Roofing Contractor 31 holders Installs and repairs roofs and roof coverings: shingles, tile, metal, membranes and roof waterproofing.
• C-43 Sheet Metal Contractor 1 holder Sheet metal work, including ductwork, flashing and architectural sheet metal.
• C-47 General Manufactured Housing Contractor 1 holder Installs, alters and repairs manufactured homes, their foundations and utility connections.
• C-53 Swimming Pool Contractor 6 holders Builds, installs and repairs swimming pools, spas and hot tubs and their equipment.
• C-54 Ceramic and Mosaic Tile Contractor 7 holders Installs ceramic, porcelain, mosaic and stone tile.
• C-57 Well Drilling Contractor 7 holders Drills, installs and repairs water wells and their pumps.
• D-06 Concrete Related Services Contractor 7 holders A C-61 limited specialty: concrete-related services such as sawing, coring, pumping and surface preparation.
• D-28 Doors, Gates and Activating Devices Contractor 4 holders A C-61 limited specialty: doors, garage doors, gates and their openers and activating devices.
• D-49 Tree Service Contractor 3 holders A C-61 limited specialty: tree pruning, trimming and removal.
• D-52 Window Coverings Contractor 5 holders A C-61 limited specialty: blinds, shades, shutters, draperies and other window coverings.
• ASB Asbestos Certification 6 holders An additional certification that a licensed contractor needs to perform work that disturbs asbestos-containing materials.
